Balsa Don Melendo
- Vía Augusta desde Cádiz / Lebrija-Las Cabezas de San Juan
Área Natural
The Don Melendo dam is an artificial lake that came into operation in 2003 to regulate and store water for irrigation.
Its location, in a flat area with an impermeable substrate, favours the accumulation of water that reaches it from a channel. The area surrounding the reservoir has been reforested with native plants such as oleander, broom, tamarisk, Aleppo pine, carob, mastic, juniper, blackthorn and poplar, together with the presence of the water table, creates a very favourable environment for the presence of numerous bird species, taking into account the proximity of the Lebrija-Las Cabezas Endorheic Complex and the Brazo del Este to the reservoir.
Access: Controlled.
Facilities: Around the dam there is a 13 km long signposted perimeter path where cycling and hiking can be done, and which forms part of the Parque San Benito-Cortijo de Los Pozos signposted route. There is a pontoon on the shore which is used for canoeing.
