Castillo y Poblado de Castrotorafe
- Vía de la Plata desde Sevilla / Zamora-Granja de Moreruela
The Fortified Village and Castle of Castrotorafe are Sites of Cultural Interest.
On a plateau, on the banks of the river Esla, the village of Castrotorafe was built in the 12th century, with this military fortification as a strategic point to reinforce the pass over the river Esla.
It was fortified by Alfonso III, and was granted the Charter of Zamora by Alfonso VII in 1129. In 1176 it passed definitively to the Military Order of Santiago.
The collapse of the bridge in the 16th century began its decline and the ruin of its fortress in the 18th century. As a result, the whole of Castrotorafe is currently in ruins, although the fence and fortress, the uninhabited area and the ruins of the church can still be seen, showing the splendid historical past of this place.
The fortified village was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on 3rd June 1931, with an extension of 4,709 metres, while the castle was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in April 1949.
It is recommended to enjoy the beauty of the sunset in this historical and natural spot.
