The Roman city of Cáparra is one of the most iconic and representative stops on the Pilgrims' Route to Santiago de Compostela - Vía de la Plata. Its four-sided arch, or tetrapylon, is the only arch of its kind in Spain and there are few examples of its kind anywhere else in the world. The archaeological site is currently being excavated, but it has an interpretation centre and part of the findings are on display in museums, and visitors can walk around the remains of the city. The origin of Cáparra is uncertain, but it was in the 1st century AD when it reached its maximum splendour.
