Nature Reserve
The Lebrija-Las Cabezas endorheic complex is the last redoubt of a large lagoon system that once covered the whole of the countryside between Seville and Cadiz. Human activity has limited this complex to the lagoons of La Cigarrera, Galiana, Peña, Pilón and Taraje, as well as Charroao. These lagoons obtain their water mainly from rainfall, which, together with the low permeability and hilly soil, give rise to the lagoons in the lower areas. Only the Cigarrera has typical riverside vegetation on its banks.
The Lebrija-Las Cabezas lagoons are of great importance for birds, acting as an alternative area to Doñana for breeding, reproduction and resting during migrations. It is easy to observe endangered species such as the horned coot or the white-headed duck, and a multitude of ducks, herons, small birds and birds of prey.
