Convento de San Jerónimo
- Vía de la Plata desde Sevilla / Zamora-Granja de Moreruela
Religious building that housed the Monastery of San Jerónimo, now in ruins.
The order of the friars of San Jerónimo arrived in Montamarta through 13 monks from the Monastery of Guadalupe, founding the monastery of Nuestra Señora de Montamarta in 1407, which received generous donations from the monarchy, such as the donation of Juan II or the oath given by the Catholic Monarchs, and which was protected by the nobility, who chose it as a place of burial.
During its period of splendour, the magnificent Chapel of Santiago was built and a Hospice and Chairs of Studies were set up, which is why the Aldermen of Zamora managed to bring it to the city in 1534.
There are numerous legends about this convent during the approximately 127 years that the monks remained in Montamarta before moving to Zamora: monks walking on water, lights that point to the right place for the construction of the building or the deaths of monks in strange circumstances.
