DIPUTACIÓN DE ZAMORA - ANTIGUO HOSPITAL DE LA ENCARNACIÓN
What is now the seat of the Diputación Provincial was built as a hospital for cures and convalescence, founded in 1629.
It has a classicist façade in which all the elements: the corner tower, the gallery of four arches, the openings... are arranged with sufficient grace. In the centre, a relief of the Annunciation of the Virgin presides over the doorway leading to a spacious chapel, inside which there is an interesting Mannerist altarpiece depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin and the Passion of Christ.
The building has a two-storey courtyard with arched galleries and underwent a major renovation in 1983 to adapt it to the new administrative offices. Its walls house an interesting collection of paintings, partly from the Prado Museum, 19th century Spanish painting, including an oil painting by Luis Madrazo, as well as works by scholarship holders of the Provincial Council in the Art Academies of the time, Zamora artists from throughout the 20th century and other acquisitions of contemporary painting and sculpture.
