The Hermitage of San Antón de Abla is located at the south-western end of the town, with its façade opening onto a small square, in the street of the same name.
Architecturally, it consists of a rectangular nave and a semi-octagonal main chapel, which rises slightly above the level of the nave and communicates directly with the sacristy. Both parts are separated by an arcade.
The exterior of the church has a rectangular main façade, crowned with a belfry that supports a small bell, which is formally independent of the roof. To the left of the entrance door there is still a sandstone monolith with an iron cross split after the Reconquest, which is identified as the ‘Cruz de S. Antón’ or the ‘Pedestal of Avitiano’.
Since time immemorial, the hermitage of San Antón has played an important role in the popular traditions of Abla, of a markedly religious nature, as evidenced by the ancient Monument of the Holy Sepulchre and the traditional ‘Lumbres’.
Its importance is manifested, apart from its architectural design, for being the cradle of ancient popular traditions integrated into the folklore of Abla.
