The hermitage of Santiago, located at the northern end of the old quarter of Casar de Cáceres, is a charming example of popular architecture from the 15th century. This hermitage, dedicated to Santiago el Mayor, is located at the exit of the Mozarabic Way of St. James - Via de la Plata, which makes it a point of special interest for pilgrims as it marks the beginning of the next stage.
Built in ashlar, masonry and ashlar, the hermitage has a simple structure with a single nave with two bays and a square chancel. The sacristy and a small belfry on the Epistle side complete its design. The pointed arches that separate the bays add a distinctive touch to its architecture.
It is also the centre of the celebration of the feast of St. James the Apostle, which takes place every 25th July with a procession through the streets where the little ones carry empty watermelons with a candle inside as lanterns and tins tied to a rope to make noise as they pass.
It is not usually open for visits.
