The Extremaduran town of Zafra annually celebrates one of the country's major livestock events, with a historical tradition dating back several centuries. The town's fairs date back to 1380, when King John I granted a weekly market, which was subsequently expanded in 1395 with a market for the feast of Saint John. In 1453, King John II expanded these grants with a larger market for Saint Michael's Day, which is the precursor to the ones held today.
The Zafra fair attracts a multitude of visitors from all the regions of Extremadura and neighboring communities to its grounds in the first days of October. The fair draws up to 1.5 million people, who feel the need to attend this complex and original exhibition each year. All kinds of artisans also gather, lending this commercial event a typical, unusual image, now lost elsewhere, with the display of products of all kinds and uses in the streets and on display.
In the recreational sphere that always accompanies all commercial activity, the Zafra Fair brings together in its extensive facilities a varied program of attractions, events, horse competitions, performances, and sports demonstrations, which prelude and accompany the days of full and marked agricultural and livestock activity.
