The sub-Baetic relief is modelled on steep limestone mountain ranges and soft valleys with marls and detrital materials. These rocks were formed from sediments deposited from about 200 million years ago (at the beginning of the Jurassic) to about 25 million years ago (around the middle of the Tertiary Era), and it has been a member of the European and Global Geoparks Network since 2006. In 2015, the Global Geoparks were renamed UNESCO Global Geoparks.
