IGLESIA DE LA ASUNCIÓN DE LA VIRGEN, SAN CEBRIÁN DE CASTRO
Pilgrims will find curious Jacobean details in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, a temple built at the end of the 19th century which still conserves the square masonry bell tower and the chapel of Christ from its original layout.
As San Cebrián is a territory of the Order of St. James, we find Jacobean details such as the reliefs of the main altarpiece of the life of St. James the Apostle with St. James in the battle of Clavijo, the decapitation of St. James the Apostle and the most curious: The miracle of the suicidal pilgrim. And on the outside of the temple there is a JACOBEAN CROSS above a large window.
The jewel of this church is the High Altarpiece, baroque from the 16th century, presided over by the Virgin of Realengo, a Romanesque carving from the 12th century and transition to Gothic.
Other works to be highlighted are the life-size Crucified Christ of Cifuentes and the Virgin of Solitude, the original one that was carried in procession during Easter Week in Zamora until 1850.
