The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y Ángeles, also known colloquially as the Baroque Mosque, is a historic religious building located in Cabra. The building is made up of five naves, the central one being slightly wider than the side ones, organised by rows of peralted arches on columns and covered with barrel vaults with lunettes and sashes over plaster decorations. Inside, 44 columns made of red jasper from the Sierra de Cabra stand out, as well as the whitewashed white. It is located in the historic quarter of the town, between the castle of Cabra and the walls, and was the baptismal place of the poet Juan Valera in 1824. Since 9 June 1982 it has been considered an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. The origin of the church comes about after the conquest of the city by Ferdinand III of Castile in 1240, when it was decided to dedicate the Muslim mosque to the Assumption of Mary, due to the fact that churches used to be consecrated on the same day of the conquest of a city, which leads us to believe that Cabra was conquered on 15th August; as well as to Santa Maria de los Angeles, due to the fact that Ferdinand III had a great devotion to this virgin, which is why numerous parish churches erected during the Reconquest in Cordoba were dedicated to her. It was rebuilt in the 14th century by the Order of Calatrava, which dominated the city.
