IGLESIA DE SANTA MARÍA DEL CASTILLO o ERMITA VIRGEN DEL CASTILLO, MONTAMARTA

In this beautiful enclave, we find the majestic Church of Santa María del Castillo, also known as Ermita de la Virgen del Castillo.

Of rustic heritage and Renaissance style, it was built in the 16th century on limestone rock and its belfry is built in masonry. The hermitage stands above the valley of the river Esla, which allows access in summer, but in the wet season its base is bathed by the waters of the river.

Inside, the church is made up of two naves separated by pillars, with a main chapel covered with a coffered ceiling.

The altar is presided over by the majestic Virgin of the Castle, a carving of a vassar carrying the baby Jesus in her left hand.

The Gothic chapel on one side is covered with a ribbed vault. The figure of San Antonio Abad can be found there. As a curiosity, on the wall there is an imitation of an altar made of plaster, which is expected to be polychrome. Next to it, there is a portico with semicircular arches and grille, dated 1894.

It was a parish church until 1850, after which it was moved to the Church of San Miguel Arcángel as it was more accessible.
