Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor
- Vía Augusta desde Cádiz / Utrera-Alcalá de Guadaira
The parish church of Santiago el Mayor is built a short distance from the castle and fortress of the city of Utrera. It is generously proportioned, showcasing the transition of architectural styles through the ages. It was registered as a Site of Cultural Interest in 1977, a monument type. The church that remains today is in the Gothic style, dating from the 15th century, consisting of three naves of the same height and a hall plan. The arches are all pointed, and the columns have shafts composed of beams and ribs very similar to those of Seville Cathedral. At the foot of the church, Renaissance features can be seen, and the Main Door or Puerta del Perdón (Forgiving Door) is in an interesting Isabelline Gothic style, dating from around 1525. A robust basket-footed arch supports the tower, while the entire façade features various Mudejar elements. The chancel, transept, and sacristy are by Lorenzo de Aredo, dating from 1596. The side portals are in neoclassical style attributed to José Echamorro. The domes of the chapels of Santo Cristo, San José, del Rosario, San Antonio, and Baptismal give the church a distinctive appearance with their interesting tilework.
