IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA ASUNCIÓN, Manganeses de la Lampreana

In the main square of Manganeses de la Lampreana stands this church built in irregular masonry, with a single nave and a Latin-curved floor plan, sacristy and semi-enclosed portico. Its belfry is divided into three sections (the last of which is finished in brick) with three semicircular openings.

But the most outstanding feature is its INTERIOR, where we find Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical and contemporary details in great works ranging from the coffered ceiling of 16th century Moorish armour, Hispano-Flemish paintings, to carvings by the renowned Zamora Holy Week image makers of Zamora: Ramón Álvarez and Ricardo Flecha.

Of great artistic value is the neoclassical High Altarpiece made of plaster and wood, which contains a Baroque relief of the Assumption, and a Crucifix from the 13th-14th century, Romanesque in its rigidity, but in full transition to Gothic, notable for its expressiveness.

Several panels of Hispano-Flemish paintings are displayed on the wall, from the 16th century school of Toro. In front of them is the relief of ‘Las Ánimas’ from the 17th century.

Ramón Álvarez left his mark on this town, with a beautiful carving of ‘Nuestra Madre de las Angustias’ (Our Mother of Sorrows) (1860) and the ‘Nazareno’ (Nazareno) (1868), which is a dress image. Both are carried in processions during Holy Week in Manganeses de la Lampreana.

One of Ricardo Flecha's first works can also be found in the Frontispiece of the church: ‘Cristo Yacente’ (1988).
