The Maya is a traditional festival held on 3 May in Valdeobispo, with no religious connotations, to welcome spring.
The main participants are women and children, who make dolls called "Mayas" out of clay pots, sticks and rags. During the day, women gather flowers and make ornaments such as necklaces and bracelets.
The festival culminates when the Mayas are taken to the water, where they are thrown and destroyed by the participants, in an atmosphere of joy and emotion. The celebration is popular and encourages cooperation between neighbours.
