It is a mausoleum or funerary tower from the end of the 2nd century, which stands as the most important testimony of the Roman municipality of Alba (present-day Abla). The locality was already mentioned in the itinerary of Antoninus (late 3rd century) as a stop for travellers on the important road or causeway that linked Castulo (Linares) with Malaga via Acci (Guadix), Urci (Almeria), Murgi (El Ejido) and Abdera (Adra).
