The Cistercian Monastery of Santa María de Moreruela is a Historical Monument that was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931 in view of the majesty of the Monument that is now in ruins.
Of 12th century Cistercian architecture with a transition to Gothic, remodelled in the 17th century. Its church already existed in 1168.
The main chapel supported by eight columns stands out, with the unsurpassed beauty of its semicircular apse and ambulatory, to which seven apsidioles open, each with an altar. The vaults are Gothic in style, with ogives and capitals with imposts and plant decoration.
If we look at the imposing chevet, we can see remains of polychromy, including plant scrolls and heraldic motifs.
The monument was affected by the disentailment and subsequent neglect, which is being recovered with a consolidation project. Free Interpretation Centre inside.
Inside the monastery is the Monastery Interpretation Centre, where you can get information on how to book a guided tour, which you are advised to request in advance.
