Description
Monte Medo is located in the middle of a plain at the foot of the Sierra de San Mamede.

The sanctuary is Baroque-Neoclassical in style and is surrounded by a wall on top of which there are four gates leading into the enclosure. The façade is a gigantic stone altarpiece, a small version of the façade of the Obradoiro in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (seven years before that of Compostela), with its balcony and altar, designed for large celebrations.

On the outside of the enclosure there are seven chapels forming a viacrucis, equidistant from each other and at the back is A Carballa dos Milagres, next to the Fonte da Virxe, where it is believed that the first hermitage dedicated to the Saint or the Virgin was located during the 9th century.

Accessing the enclosure from the back door, we find the remains of the lantern of the previous temple, also Baroque, from the 17th century, and towards the front, on the same side of the temple, we see the Crucero de la Piedad, originally from the 16th century, reformed and decorated in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since the 19th century, the Sanctuary has been run by the congregation of the Paules Fathers.

Throughout Galicia, northern Portugal and in general in the northwest of the peninsula, the novena of the Virgin is celebrated and recognised from the end of August until 8 September.

During these days the sanctuary is full of the faithful and fair stalls, where we can enjoy an authentic popular pilgrimage: festive and religious of great tradition.
