The Pilar de los Alamos was built in 1552 and was designed, although not finished, by Jacob Florentino "the Florentine", predecessor of Diego de Siloé in the Church of the Jerónimos in Granada, both artists being the creators of the so-called Andalusian Renaissance style. The front of the Pilar is made of sandstone and depicts two warriors holding the shield of Alcalá, protected by two figures called "griffins."
