Plaza del Altozano
- Vía Augusta desde Cádiz / Utrera-Alcalá de Guadaira
The Plaza del Altozano in Utrera is a large square that presides over the centre of this Sevillian town. Located in the heart of the historic quarter, this square plays the role of a true Plaza Mayor. It is the main meeting point for the population and also its most representative urban space.
Physically, it is configured as a large square with a roughly rectangular ground plan. On its four fronts there are a series of buildings of a certain traditional character, three or four storeys high, which, although very different from one another, give it a certain homogeneous appearance.
Bordered by trees and benches and restricted to the passage of road traffic, the square invites you to take a quiet stroll and also to chat and contemplate while sitting on one of the many terraces that extend towards the centre, especially on its two longest fronts.
Among its religious buildings, some stand out, such as the church of San Francisco, which has its right side facing the square and, a little further back, its belfry. Also visible are the domes of the nearby church of Santiago, which look out over the houses on the smaller front.
Among the civil and residential buildings, the 17th and 18th century façades are still preserved and are scattered around the square along its fronts. They are especially recognisable by their long balconies or balconies, made up of rows of openings ending in round arches.
