Of Roman origin, it supplied water to the Roman city of Merida. Built in the S.II after Christ, declared National Monument in 1912 and World Heritage in 1923 along with the archaeological site of Mérida.
It is the oldest Roman dam still in operation.
Stands out for a filling from a channel that draws water from another river bed that is responsible for the filling of the Cornalvo Reservoir. There is also a spillway.
