PUENTE DE PIEDRA, ZAMORA 

Built in the 12th century, it is the oldest preserved and for many centuries was the only river crossing in the city.

It has sixteen pointed arches that cross one of the widest areas of the Duero River. It has sixteen large pointed vaults with different spillways in the form of arches over the piers. The cutwaters are triangular in shape.

It was originally crenellated and had two large defensive towers at the ends, being an extension of the wall of the third enclosure that reached that far. It also had an adjoining chapel on the left side dedicated to the Virgin of the Guide, patron saint of walkers, which is nowadays located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

In the 20th century the defensive elements disappeared, its towers were dismantled and its battlements were removed from the Built in the 12th century, it is the oldest preserved and for many centuries was the only river crossing in the city.

It became popular for its weather vane, which represented Fame and which the people of Zamora baptised with the name of ‘La Gobierna’, as well as the different coats of arms, inscriptions and medallions. The famous ‘Gobierna’, now on display in the Museum of Zamora, was saved from destruction.
