Romería de Piedraescrita, a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, is the main festival in Campanario.
On Easter Mondays, Campanario hosts one of the most ‘multitudinous’ festivities in the region of La Serena, the Romería de Piedraescrita. This is a celebration in honour of its patron saint, the Virgin of Piedraescrita, whose image dates back, according to legend, to the 13th century and for whom a hermitage was built in the 15th century, right on the spot where the carving was found. It is precisely in this place where a day of festivities that begins months before with the preparation of the floats, carts and stables that form part of one of the highlights of the festival: the parade of floats.
Its main attraction is the spectacular parade of floats, carts and horses decorated for the occasion. The parade takes place through the streets and the centre of the town. The most outstanding thing about the floats is that they are authentic works of art made of tissue paper and glued with ‘pucha’, a mixture of flour and water. They are very colourful and the motifs are very diverse.
Once the parade is over, the pilgrims make their way to the hermitage of Piedraescrita, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, located on the Los Barrancos estate, some 5 kilometres from the village. Religious ceremonies are held here, followed by a picnic in the surrounding area.
