Romería de San Isidro en Las Cabezas de San Juan

Type of event: Romería
Locality: Cabezas de San Juan (Las) (Sevilla)
Path and stage:
  • Vía Augusta desde Cádiz / Las Cabezas de San Juan-Utrera

It is held in mid-May. It is one of the most popular festivities in the municipality, in which thousands of people accompany the image of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza on foot and on horseback, on floats and in charrettes to the pine groves of Sacramento where they spend the night until they return the following day. It is organised by the Brotherhood of San Isidro de las Cabezas de San Juan with the collaboration of the Town Council's Department of Festivities. The venue has changed over the years, originally it was organised in the ‘El Taraje’ lagoon. In the 1980s the celebration was moved to the area popularly known as ‘el Río’, located in the marshes of the Lower Guadalquivir. In 1986 the venue was changed again, this time to the Finca ‘Campano’. Since 1987 it has been held in the same place mentioned above.
The pilgrimage takes place from Las Cabezas to the pines of Sacramento, with a large procession of floats, charres and horses. At present, 80 floats, 80 charres and 300 horses take part. The floats are decorated with white cloth and a green stripe. During the procession, the Romera of the year is named. The presentation of the Pilgrimage poster takes place a few days before the Fair, at the end of April in the Church of San Juan Bautista. This is also the place where the proclamation of the pilgrimage takes place.
