Santa Marina de Augas Santas
Santa Marina de Augas Santas is an attractive historical, artistic and scenic site in which history, tradition and legend blend together. In 1931 the area around the church was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument and in 1963 the district was declared a Historic-Artistic Site.
Monuments, fountains, trees and places form the backdrop to a legend that is still alive, rooted in three fundamental elements: landscape, stone and, of course, water.
The Legend
The tradition is linked to the existence and martyrdom of Mariña, who resisted the wishes of a prefect in the City of Armea, called Olibrio, who used all kinds of strategies to overcome her resistance, including chain, trial and punishment. But nothing worked against the girl's iron will, neither the whip, nor the devil in the form of a #dragon...Condemned to burn to death in a nearby furnace, she will come out alive thanks to St. Peter, who left her beside a pond. Finally, the prefect ordered her head to be cut off, which was carved off with one blow, but cast three times, a fountain gushing from each cast. No place where she was buried a temple arose, in which no one else was buried.
