The Nasrid Tower of Santa Fe de Mondújar is the only surviving example of a farmhouse tower for the defence of a small rural town, of which there were several in the area around Almería. It is a defensive element located around one or more farmhouses to shelter the population that could not take refuge in the castles. These towers are usually square with several floors, accessed from the first floor. They may have had a small walled enclosure attached to them to accommodate men, movable property and livestock. Dating from between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Nasrid tower of Santa Fe de Mondújar corresponds to the type of watchtower-fortress used by the Arabs to exercise their dominion over a territory.
