Yacimiento Arqueológico

The Archaeological Ensemble of Tózar consists of the Mozarabic Necropolis, three 10th century Silos, a prehistoric Dolmen known as ‘Pileta de la Zorra’, a complex defensive system dating from the Civil War (1936) and the existence of one of the only Mozarabic farmhouse-type settlements in Andalusia, dating from the 9th to the 12th century. The Mozarabic Necropolis excavated in the rock includes more than forty burials of three different types: anthropomorphic, bath and rectangular (the fact that the anthropomorphic tombs prevail over the others gives the site a strong character and uniqueness). Most of the tombs have a step around the moat that was used to support the roof, which was made of stone slabs. The location of the tombs, which are very close to each other, seems to have been intended to be adjacent to a specific space, perhaps a religious building or other symbolic element. Another peculiarity of the burials is that they show a great homogeneity in their orientation, almost all of them being arranged in a west-east direction with the head towards the west. It is this human, archaeological, period and cultural diversity that makes the Tozar Archaeological Ensemble a unique place in which more than XX centuries of history coexist.
