Camino Sanabrés desde Granja de Moreruela

STAGE 02 Tábara - Santa Marta de Tera

  • DISTANCE: 22,94 km
  • VILLAGES: 4
  • HOSTING: 7

We walk through an area of oaks, holm oaks, vineyards and chestnut trees. There are two options for this stage: via Villanueva de las Peras (with an image of Santiago in the church) or via Bercianos de Valverde; both converge a few kilometres before reaching Santa Croya de Tera. It is surprising to see the appearance of the wine cellars in these villages, dug into the ground, which some friendly and hospitable locals offer to show us.

We go out among poplars to the river Castrón, and after crossing it and a pleasant walk we arrive at Santa Croya de Tera, a village next to the banks of the river Tera, where we can have a swim in the summer season. Just two kilometres away, on the other side of the river, is Santa Marta de Tera, which has a beautiful Romanesque church with a square apse, beautiful capitals and fine chesswork, which was part of the monastery that existed here. On the southern doorway you can see the stone image of Santiago Peregrino; this is the oldest surviving carving of the apostle with the attributes of a pilgrim, which has become the universal icon of the Pilgrim's Way and the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
