STAGE: Torremejía - Mérida

  • DISTANCE: 14,84 km
  • VILLAGES: 2

We set off along the Torremejía road. A short stretch along the N-630 will take us back to the road, which, between olive trees and vineyards, will end on the banks of the Guadiana River. Following its course we find the entrance to the Roman bridge of Emerita, the longest in the whole Empire.

With the thrill of stepping on its legendary stones, we arrive at the centre of Mérida, founded by Emperor Augustus and Roman city par excellence of the Silver Route. Capital of Lusitania and World Heritage Site, we cannot fail to stroll through its streets and visit its Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre, the Temple of Diana, the Arch of Trajan, the Aqueduct of Miracles, the Basilica of Santa Eulalia, and the National Museum of Roman Art.

Mérida is currently the political capital of Extremadura, a small but thriving city, which despite its modern and well-designed urban expansion, preserves the traditional flavour of small shops in its pedestrian streets, the meeting of its people in its squares, and the pleasure of strolling through the parks on the banks of the Guadiana.
