STAGE: Villafranca de los Barros - Torremejía
The national road takes part of the route of the Roman road, so we leave along the Old Road until after a few kilometres we reach it again, just where the ‘mansio Perceiana’ is located, to then continue between olive groves and vineyards.
Almendralejo is three kilometres from the road. If you want to visit it, take a detour along a local road. Capital of the natural region of Tierra de Barros, it is home to the parish church with its beautiful tower, the church of Santiago, the hermitage of La Piedad, and the palace of the Marquis of Monsalud, today the seat of the town hall. It is also known for its wine cellars, where wines and cavas with designation of origin are produced.
We return to the old road that will take us in a straight line, after crossing the railway line, to Torremejía. Its perpendicular and wide streets will attract our attention, as a large part of this town was planned in the 20th century Badajoz Plan. At the western end is the church and the palace of the Mexia family, with a coat of arms and veneras on the lintel of the door, and walls built with material from the haulage, stelae and the remains of Roman sculptures among them.
