STAGE: Oliva de Plasencia - Aldeanueva del Camino
On leaving Oliva de Plasencia, we can return to Venta Quemada to rejoin the Cañada Real de la Plata, or go directly to Cáparra along the road to the Los Baldíos estate, the latter being the route we recommend.
It is a pleasant walk that takes us under the Arch of Cáparra, an emblematic place on the Silver Route, and the only quadriform triumphal arch in the Iberian Peninsula. At present, work is being done to recover the disappeared Roman settlement, as we can see in its interpretation centre (check opening hours), with toilets and vending machines for drinks and food.
We continue walking along the road through the delightful landscape of the Extremaduran pastureland to Aldeanueva del Camino. This town welcomes us with a tile that reproduces the route of the road. In the past, the village was divided into two, Aldeanueva de Arriba, which belonged to the diocese of Plasencia, and Aldeanueva de Abajo, which belonged to the diocese of Coria, and therefore had two parishes with two churches which are still preserved.
It also had a pilgrims' hospital until the 1930s. The architecture of Aldeanueva began to be more mountainous and its buildings were more adapted to the cold and rain. The popular wooden balconies in the market square are a good example of this.
