STAGE: Castuera - Campanario
From the Plaza de España, along the Paseo de Santa Ana and Calle Zurbarán, we reach the exit to Castuera and just at the premises of the Salón Ovino, we turn left onto a road which is asphalted for the first few kilometres and continues along a dirt track known as the ‘Senda del Rey’ (King's Path), described in the chronicles of Ferdinand III the Saint as the route he followed from Medellín, a town we will enjoy later on, and once he had conquered Magacela and Benquerencia de La Serena, he finished the reconquest in La Serena and continued on to Córdoba.
This route is full of history, of pastureland landscapes with holm oaks and herds of Merino sheep that speak of transhumance in Extremadura and of a unique cultural richness. The route coincides with the GR-115 and the Way to Guadalupe.
When we reach the River Guadalefra we will come across an iron bridge, from the Eiffel school, to continue further on and pass through the gate of the old railway station of Quintana de la Serena, to turn right after just 1 kilometre towards Campanario along the Vereda de Zalamea de la Serena. At the end of the Vereda, cross the EX-104 road in the area known as ‘Las Iglesias Caídas’ to reach the Ermita neighbourhood and from here go down to the Plaza de España, where the Town Hall and the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción are located.
