STAGE: Monterrubio de la Serena - Castuera
On leaving Monterrubio de la Serena we will find a tarmac track on the right that will lead us towards the La Serena meadows in the direction of Castuera. Between pastures of holm oaks and olive groves, we will enjoy a route without difficulties, with a very accessible profile but always being careful with the passage of agricultural vehicles on this track.
If we make our way in autumn or winter, we will be accompanied by the common crane that winters in La Serena from the north of Europe.
When we reach the junction of this track with the one that comes from Benquerenica de la Serena in the direction of Puerto Hurraco, we will have a view of the Sierra de Tiros on our right, where the rocky outcrop of Benquerencia, a fortress built by the Almohads and reconquered in 1236 by the troops of the Order of Alcántara, who were fighting under the orders of King Ferdinand III the Saint in the reconquest in the direction of Córdoba, stands out.
At the end of the asphalted track, the last few kilometres are on a road until we reach the outskirts of Castuera, where we enter the Interpretation Centre of the Special Protection Area for Birds of La Serena and the Nougat Museum, to reach the Plaza de España, where the Parish Church of Santa María Magdalena awaits us.
