STAGE: Casar de Cáceres - Cañaveral
From the pilgrims' hostel in Casar de Cáceres and passing through the door of the hermitage dedicated to Santiago, we continue along a path between stone walls until we reach a detour that will lead us through the plains of Cáceres in a stage marked by the livestock tradition of this region, among cattle and sheep, along the Vía de la Plata that reminds us of its history by several deposits of milestones and some still standing, testimony of this ancestral road.
‘Miliario’ comes from the Latin word ‘millia passuum’ = 1,000 ‘passus’ = 1,480 metres, approximately. On these columns were carved the number of the mile and the name of the Emperor who had made or rebuilt the stretch of road.
On today's stage we will have to open several livestock gates, which we will leave closed and we will enter a pseudo-steppe with great environmental value to reach the vicinity of the Alcántara Reservoir, where we will find the half-submerged Floripes Tower, belonging to the castle built in the 15th century.
Continuing on our way we reach the medieval bridge of San Benito which helps us to ford the Guadancil stream and which leads us towards Cañaveral, passing the fountain of San Benito and arriving at the Church of Santa Marina, one of the oldest churches in this beautiful region.
