STAGE: Don Benito - Torrefresneda (Variante)

  • DISTANCE: 30,06 km
  • VILLAGES: 3
  • HOSTING: 10

Having left the region of La Serena behind, we now enter the region of Vegas Altas del Guadiana. From the Parish Church of Santiago Apóstol, which has a sculpture of Santiago Peregrino, we continue along the streets Arroyazo and Ancha, passing the gates of the Claret School, founded at the end of the 19th century, to reach the Parque de las Albercas, leaving it on our left and leaving Don Benito along Calle Leonardo Torres Quevedo in the Isaac Peral Industrial Estate. After passing under the railway track, we turn left and after crossing a road we turn left again and then turn right and continue along a path between country houses and irrigated land that leads us to Medellín, which with the view of its castle will be the horizon that we will have to look at at all times.

The entrance to Medellín will undoubtedly be one of the moments that we will keep in our minds of the Mozarabic Way: after a slight climb we will find the Roman Theatre, the last theatre excavated in the 20th century in Spain, on the side of the majestic Castle and the Church of Santiago Apóstol, now converted into the Interpretation Centre of the Archaeological Park of Medellín, the birthplace of Hernán Cortés.

After descending towards the Parish Church of Santa Cecilia and crossing the Guadiana River over the medieval bridge, barely 1 km further on you will find the possibility of turning right and heading towards Santa Amalia, a town founded in the mid-19th century and the alternative for this stage, so that after recharging your batteries with all kinds of services, you can head towards Torrefresneda. Attention, pilgrims, take the utmost caution in the 3 km stretch where the path coincides with the N-430 road.

Heading towards the River Búrdalo and after crossing it, in 4 km we will reach another of the Pueblos de Luz, Torrefresneda, the final place of our stage.
