We leave Zamora and set off on a walk through the suburbs to Roales del Pan. After crossing the main street, we leave along the cattle track, which will take us to Montamarta. Near this village, saved from the waters of the Ricobayo reservoir, and rebuilt stone by stone, is the church of San Pedro de la Nave, a jewel of Visigothic art.
Montamarta is a small village born at the foot of the Camino, where the pilgrim can find bars, restaurants and a hostel for a well-deserved rest. To the north of the village is the hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo, a beautiful place next to the tail of the reservoir, a place of devotion and local pilgrimages.
We will soon see the ruins of the castle of Castrotorafe, an important medieval enclave, seat of the Knights of the Order of Santiago and former capital of the kingdom of León in 1176.
In Fontanillas de Castro we can quench our thirst and regain our strength. A few kilometres away is Riego del Camino, a small village with a bar and shop, and just 6 kilometres further on is Granja de Moreruela, a crossroads on the Pilgrims' Road to Santiago. If we follow the road we reach Astorga, where we join the French Way. If we turn northwest, we will reach Santiago on the Camino Sanabrés and Ourense, which is our proposal in this guide.
